Round Rock ISD Chess Tournaments

Pawns Chess Tournament
The Round Rock ISD Pawns Chess Tournament is for true novice chess players who want to experience a formal tournament setting, but aren't ready to commit to having a United States Chess Federation (USCF) membership. It is open to any student who is enrolled within the District in grades 2-8.The Pawns tournament runs from 8:45 AM to 1:30 PM on a flexible schedule as rounds finish. After round 1, sections will proceed independently from other sections. We may finish before 1:30 PM. Check in for the Pawns tournament begins at 8:45 AM Round 1 matches begin at 9:30 AM. (Late arrivals will not be added to Round 1 and will be assigned a forfeit loss.) Rounds take from 20 minutes to 40 minutes to run and we proceed as quickly as we can throughout the day. Tournament Details: Date:March 28, 2026 Location: Deerpark Middle School Sections: 2 sections divided by grade based upon registration (Sections may be merged if needed) 3 Rounds Time Control: Game in 20 Clocks and boards provided Students who place in the top 6 of their section will receive a certificate. Prior to registering for this tournament please review the Round Rock ISD Chess Tournament Rules and Guidelines and review our Chess Tournament FAQ Web Page.Space is limited. To register your student for the tournament please complete the registration before March 23 at 8:00 AM. Registration closes at that time or when the tournament seats fill.

Knights Chess Tournament
This Round Rock ISD Knights Chess Tournament is our most competitive tournament. It is open to any student who is enrolled within the District in grades 2-8. Students must have a current membership to the United States Chess Federation to participate.Previous tournament experience is recommended for all participants.The Knights tournament runs from 7:45 AM to 4:00 PM on a flexible schedule as rounds finish. After round 1, sections will proceed independently from other sections. We may finish before 4:00 PM. Check in for the Knights tournaments begins at 7:45 AM Round 1 matches begin at 8:30 AM. (Late arrivals will not be added to Round 1 and will be assigned a forfeit loss.) Rounds take from 40 minutes to 1 hour to run and we proceed as quickly as we can throughout the day. Tournament Details: Date:March 28, 2026 Location: Deerpark Middle School Sections: Under 800, Round Rock ISD Championship 2-8 (No rating limit) Sections may be added if needed 5 Rounds Time Control: Game in 30 delay 5 Clocks and boards provided Students who place in the top 6 of their section will receive a certificate. The Block City Adventure is a hands-on camp designed specifically for the curious minds and busy hands of Rising Kinder and 1st Graders. We’re turning the classroom into a giant construction site where "playing with blocks" becomes a mission to build the world’s coolest city. Builders will learn about all the components that help our cities run from our rescue teams to neighborhoods and parks, and then create and design these areas as a construction team. They will then populate their city with figurines and vehicles to bring their design to life.

Animals are Amazing is designed for students interested in animals, science, and creative problem-solving. Students will explore how animals survive in diverse environments through physical and behavioral adaptations, while also examining how humans use biomimicry—borrowing ideas from nature—to engineer solutions that help us function in environments that are less ideal for humans. Throughout the week, students will design an original animal and habitat, intentionally selecting adaptations that address environmental challenges, and will also explain how humans could learn from or mimic those adaptations. The culminating project is a take-home animal-and-habitat design with written scientific justification. This camp is aligned with TAG characteristics by emphasizing critical and creative thinking, systems thinking, transfer of learning, and the application of scientific concepts to novel, real-world situations.

Calling all young inventors! Do you see a spaceship where others see a milk carton? In this hands-on, high-energy camp, we are turning "trash" into "treasure." Each day, we take one common household item destined for the bin and use the Engineering Design Process to transform it into a functional gadget, a piece of art, or a scientific tool. Great inventors must also be great communicators! Students will choose their most successful invention and create a professional advertisement to sell it. They will learn the "Art of Persuasion," practicing how to highlight features, solve customer problems, and pitch their ideas with confidence.No screens, no limits—just pure imagination and tinkering. Your student will leave with four unique "Upcycled Masterpieces" and a new perspective on the world!
